Witford Nigeria Limited: We are launching our NGO!
“At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished, it’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.” ― Denzel Washington
.
Is it really worth it to achieve so much and give so little? As a company, we don’t think so. Founded on the 22nd of December 2016, we’ve always had a soft spot for giving back to the society around us.
Previously, we have executed pet projects in Ogbomoso by visiting orphanages and economically empowering the youth in our environs.
Today, we want to go a step further.
To mark our 5th anniversary, we’ve decided to launch a vehicle for giving back to society: our very own NGO.
We’ve experienced the joy of giving first hand: as a company and as individuals. And with what we’ve experienced, we were spurred to do more knowing we are helping someone, somewhere become better.
What is our NGO going to be about?
Indeed, we can’t do all the good there is to do on earth, but we can make a difference in the small way we can. As a company committed to growth, we have found ourselves drawn to a couple of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals are:
- Zero hunger,
- No poverty,
- Climate action,
- Life on land,
- Quality education, and
- Clean water and sanitation.
Zero Hunger:
To face this, we are going to be giving out foodstuffs and cooked meals to children, especially the underprivileged ones. We would frequently visit orphanage homes, hospitals, and impoverished communities, and identify the children in need in such places.
After that, we would distribute foodstuffs and other basic needs with love to them. It doesn’t just end at giving them food. We would spend time with them like they are our kids too.
No Poverty:
Nigeria is still the poverty capital in the world, with almost 94 million people living below the poverty line, according to This Day.
94 million people are not just numbers to us, they are real people. Every day, many Nigerians struggle to get just a square meal.
With our NGO, we plan to reduce the poverty index in communities around us through economic empowerment schemes. We’re going to teach people how to fish, not just to give them fish.
We plan to train hundreds of youth in cashew farming and exportation, something we have been doing expertly well for more than 5 years.
With the knowledge of cashew farming, trained youths can set up their own cashew farms and become employers of labour.
How do we plan to set them up? Well, we would liaise with landowners in different communities and ask them to lease land to us so our trainees can farm. We would also purchase land for them, which they can pay back in instalments at no interest.
Cashew trees would also bring a breath of fresh air to our environment, which takes us to our next SDG.
Climate action:
Plants in general supply oxygen to the environment. With global warming rates hitting all-time highs, we can, in our small way, reduce the harsh effects of global warming through trees.
Tree planting is one way to better the environment, but how about cultivating trees that bring in money for their communities too?
Our cashew farming community initiative aims to reduce climate action for a better atmosphere. We would also complete eco-friendly methods from cultivation to processing, so we don’t harm the environment further.
Life on land:
Deforestation has caused several problems for us. A lack of trees means a hotter climate, a diminishing landscape, and an elimination of natural habitats for tree-based animals.
Afforestation, which is the process of planting trees, would be our main objective. As much as we would be encouraging the cultivation of cashew trees, we would support other afforestation projects around us.
Quality education:
Education is power. We understand that an educated generation is much more productive than an uneducated one. That’s why we plan to sponsor a specific number of children each year.
We would focus on children from poor backgrounds, those that have no one to sponsor their education. As we sponsor these children, we hope they become beacons of light to their world.
Clean water and sanitation:
The number of people who lack a cessation to clean water globally is disheartening. In some places, people have to go through tiring distances just to get water for their daily needs.
We started by digging boreholes for communities without a cess to clean water, but now, we want to do more. Not only would communities have clean water, but they would also live in more sanitary conditions.
In giving, we receive even more. Thank you for taking this first step with us as we colour our world.
